Support to help you study

If you are interested in further studies, there are a range of options available. You can consider:

  • going to TAFE and enrolling in a diploma, certificate or short course
  • going to university and enrolling in a Bachelor degree or a double Bachelor degree. If a dual award is available for the area of study you are interested in, you can also combine a degree with a TAFE course.

In Queensland, there are a range of TAFE and university institutions that offer courses. You can find a university, and get details for TAFE Queensland institutes and campuses.

Getting started with study

If you know what you'd like to study, you can apply to be accepted into a course at a university or TAFE. You'll need to meet entry requirements before you begin your formal studies. You can find out about how to apply, support offered with the Educational Access Scheme and recognition of prior learning.

How to apply

Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre, or QTAC, receives applications for most undergraduate courses at Queensland universities, as well as applications for some TAFE and private provider courses. The QTAC website provides details about:

Educational Access Scheme

If you have a disability or have experienced a long-term or severe illness, you may be eligible for support with QTAC's Educational Access Scheme (EAS). Depending on your circumstances, you might receive:

  • access to technologies to support you with your studies
  • extra time for assignments
  • adjustments with assessment activities
  • consideration with your GPA, or entry rank, when you submit your application.

Recognition of prior learning

If you have acquired skills on the job or from other life experiences that you'd like to be taken into account with your application, you can apply for recognition of prior learning. This is a process that recognises a student's current skills and experience, including formal or informal training and education, as well as general life experience and work experience. Support to help you with study

Support is available to help you if you are studying at university or TAFE.

I'm a TAFE student. What support is available for me?

TAFE Queensland provides support services and advice for students with a disability. Disability Services at each TAFE Queensland Institute can give you assistance and advice, such as:

  • a learning support plan, plus other types of support to help you learn
  • flexibility with how you submit assessment items and complete the subjects in your course
  • help with contacting other groups and agencies that can support you with your studies.

To find out about support that's available to you, contact the Disability Services Officer at the TAFE Queensland Institute where you are studying or intend to study.

You can also call TAFE Queensland on 1300 308 233. If you are deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment, you can call through the National Relay Service:

I'm at a Queensland uni. Who should I contact for support?

Universities offer support services for students with a disability. You can find out what support is available for you by contacting a University Disability Adviser at the tertiary institution where you study.

The Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training provides contact details for University Disability Advisers at Queensland universities.
